Slumber Rain

an eerie calmness
pushed by the wind
floats around me
chilling my senses
as the rain gently
hits the ground in
soft beads of sound;
rhythm is not lost
when the skies
decide to cry and
nature receives the
nourishment it so
involuntarily desires
before decapitation
by the master of the
land whose task it
is to cut back for
a winter's rest and
needed rejuvenation.

Fall Showers

down from the heavens it falls
so quickly it is hard to see each
droplet until it hits the ground
and splashing into the next one
falling right after and behind;
down from the trees it falls
collecting on the branches
and the leaves until it weight
forces bending and its release
down to the ground where it
puddles and spreads carving
gullies into unprotected clay;
down from the bushes it falls
as the cupped leaves cannot
hold it liquid, pouring it onto
the grass where it is absorbed
until the earth swells and
releases what nature has so
easily and willingly provided.

Relentless Time

a fluttering American flag
every morning seen,
evergreen trees towering behind
hardly covering the blue sky
so often appearing without
clouds in the valley;
sunshine creeps around the corner
of a makeshift barricade,
wandering currents of air
push vigilantly towards an unseen goal
as the magic of resistance keeps
guides them on their way;
the tops of trees and the
tops of houses surrounded
form the substance of gaze
oftentimes obstructed by the
silent nature of its own beauty;
empty feeders hang stilled with
the absence of the humming birds
that battled for ownership and
possession of their treasures
long since southern bound,
remind us of their gentle souls
and the passing of relentless time.

My Morning Muse

a coolness permeates my thoughts
splitting them into words without
purpose or meaning, allowing them
to gather in crowds of confusion
sorting out the lesser meaning while
enabling the more profound to escape
the mundane of editing enlightenment;
a stillness invades my imagination
separating the herd of words from the
stragglers who bend and distort one's
meaning to the point of meaninglessness
while allowing the dribble to appear
in incomplete sentences on paper;
a gentle breeze floats my words to the
surface of momentary consciousness
giving time for assembly and reassembly
that tosses out those ill conceived
notions, replacing them with juxtaposition
and the layers of a brick mason's dream.

Fall Failings

untrimmed bushes parade around the enclosure
sheltering the pool of water on the other side,
a lone blue bird house stands unprotected from
the winter elements soon to arrive sooner or later
as the temperatures drop to accommodate the
climate changes appearing on the horizon of time;
freshly cut grasses mute the colors of the ground
highlighting the valleys and undulations of the
mother who gave them all a chance at life and
while it might be briefly experienced, it is still
a life that few in nature every really experience;
Bradford Pears stand aloof as they overshadow
the land around them and rabbits scurry around
preparing for the day they will remain inside,
knowing that only some of them will survive
while ignoring the dilemma in which they find
themselves each year the warmth leaves them.

An Intellectual Race

t
he world watches in awe
as we decay and dissolve
our values in front of them;
we turn ourselves inside out
and outside in to find the
correct reason for our decline
and when nothing arises
out of our deliberations,
we blame those who oppose us
and who do not agree with our
philosophies of life and who
should have what if any of
the spoils of our labors that
were designed never to be
shared in the first place;
we watch, listen, and wait
for our senses to arrive but
dislocated they seem to be
and we struggle with our
own sensibilities that have
been hidden away in the
vaults of our minds believing
we are an intellectual race.

Mental Pastures

a creature walks across my mind
like an animal in the night
through trails of inappropriate thoughts
that possess me during the day;
a stampede of ideas float aimlessly
behind as if a dust cloud resulted
leaving me awake and anxious with
no assistance in sighted in darkness;
prevailing dreams of yesterday
calm my frozen exteriors and I can
feel the fear coursing through my
veins replacing the thin blood;
fences of emotions stand ready to
corral what little is left and
disappear when morning shines
a little light on the experience.

End of Insight

life lives alongside death
ignored and omitted,
undertones of despair
creep into our existence
faint reminders from
how powerless we are;
and, in the clouds we
see faces reminiscent of
what it was like or
what it was to be but
never happened...
death lives alongside life
starting at birth and
postponed for evolution
and understanding,
returning when that which
was most desired has
been misunderstood as
being our sole purpose.

Sunshine Happiness

morning coolness rushes in through
the open porch door reducing the heat
from the night before when windows
were shut due to the pounding rain;
lifeless bodies sit in lifeless chairs
gazing out upon the wet terrain
freshly mowed before the onslaught
with the smell of it all dampened;
muted sounds of life in the distance
ride along currents of stilled air as
they dissipate and disappear into
the realm of one's quick imagination;
hummingbirds fight for dominance
over the various feeders strategically
placed on either side of the house
building up their migration courage;
without humidity our feline friends
are free to meander around like lost
souls searching for salvation that is
only reserved for those who believe;
sunshine happiness appears through
the clouds and blue eyes turn brown
for a Siamese who spends his days
feeling the heat upon a thin body;
red and yellow blooms will soon
fall to the ground announcing a
change of seasons as the transition
will take several weeks to complete.

End of Summer

from behind the morning clouds
the sun appears, drying the rain
that fell during the humid night;
puffs of wind move quickly through
the bushes and trees whose leaves
have already turn upside down;
a butterfly flutters by on its way
to unknown destinations while
hummingbirds fight for nectar;
cats curled up and breathing heavy
do not notice the birds that study
the movements of their claws;
tiny spiders feast on flies that
have been caught in their webs
that are seldom visible at night;
fake flowers collect insects as the
dust collects on their pedals and
their beauty fades from the sun;
skies turn grayish white then darken
as the rain approaches the valley
and outside activities are abandoned;
newly installed rail caps have already
become weathered in the short time
that they have been exposed outside;
school bells no longer ring but the
students are inside brick buildings
learning to social distancing rooms;
labor day has come and past as it
has done so many times before
alerting us all the end of summer.

Sultry and Silent

humidity like fog lingers
moisture seeps through pores
eyes squint and burn and
movements lessen by all
who have the pleasure of
being out and about not
just limited to animals who
lay around in lifeless bundles
breathing heavy as the air
flows in and out in patterns
that indicate a little distress;
just another summer day
brought about by conditions
outside of one's control
as everything slows down
to avoid too much exposure.

Sight Unseen

four stars tonight in the sky I see
two bright and two not so bright,
none of the stars are close enough
to know each other very well and
far enough away not to compete;
they live in a universal void of
darkness both matter and energy,
stationary due to gravity's curves
that surround them constantly;
no one inhabits these stars nor do
want to be possessed by anyone,
living free and clear changes in
their all natural environments;
four stars in a galaxy of millions
have chosen to bare their faces
while all the rest remain hidden
for fear that to be seen is to one
day take away their freedom and
their autonomous rights of self
preservation in a universe that
is expanding into nothingness.

Awakened

fog obscures sight
no sky to admire
no clouds to imagine faces
no sun to protect against;
it is a transition day
that announces change
as blooms on bushes
step forward one last time
with their beauty
and pretend all is well,
their sacrifice expected
and the rumble tumbling
of sounds break the
morning silence hiding
behind the innocence
of a brand new day.

Peace of Mind

and when the summer days end
warmth remains in the South,
and when the rain begins to fall
we soon harvest what we can,
and when the snow blocks life
we continue our movements,
and when the skies turn black
we have perpetual blue horizons,
and when the leave fall off trees
we admire the dark greens of winter,
and when we drive around highways
we never have to pay a toll,
and when reasonable hates others
we seems to embrace diversity,
and when life seems to hectic
we dine at a reasonable pace,
life is not about a location but
a reassuring peace-of-mind.

Feminine Transformation

beneath the soft and gentle exterior
of a hairless male body, lies the
repressed feminine feelings that
seldom are able to be released;
up and down his flat stomach his
hands and fingers slide effortlessly
along the silky skin as an imagination
takes him into an unknown world
of sexual sensations and desires
recklessly needing to be shared
but always contained like before;
palms and fingers probe the male
genitalia he wished were female
and beyond finds  the opening of
his animal but sensuous instincts
sliding in and out of the furnace;
relaxed and relieved, a silk robe
covered his sweat stained body,
closed eyes announces his
willing submission to the dark
side of his reluctance to publicly
admit his feminine transformation.

Setting Aside

bound by societal norms
and double standards,
we toy with unconventional
set aside expectations
rely on perceptions
see false as real
and real as truth
not caring who is right
as long as we get
that which is desired
but not needed
since we are dependent
upon society for our
playful existence.

Something New For My Viewers...

Trusting

water churns in life's pool
we hesitate and the
coolness returns preventing
full disclosure and we
complain to the gods as if
we trust their answers
that never arrive in time
for our adjustments,
aging out of thought
and actions while gaining
in experience and regrets
even when chance owns
all the natural solutions.

Brevity

foolishly
we attempt slow down time
by keeping young
with our bodies
hoping
it will suffice
but only
postpones the inevitable
and we curse
the day we were born
into this life
because
it is so brief.

Incognito

hovering above the lower limits
of one's creative imagination are
the burdens we must carry forth;
the telltale signs of disbelief that
form our lackluster faiths, some
of which are collective while
others a philosophical desire;
we assume nothing while
believing everything we see
like a child learning to walk
and a parrot learning to talk,
a dog howling at a siren or
demons in the night whose
sole purpose is to disrupt sleep;
we are instinctive yet cautious
bending the rules that we can
while enforcing those we cannot
and criticizing the system that
allows us to behave foolishly.

Lenses

through different lenses we see life
not all the same but similar while
claiming to be authentic and right;
our lenses unite and divide
and seldom compromise
without favoritism extended
undermining the efforts made;
clueless, we ignore Peter and Paul
in our attempts to control events,
pausing to reassure and remind
that despite our distorted lenses
we are somehow all still equal.

A Morning Crime

the morning sun hides behind the clouds
I know not why...
the coolness of the morning prevails,
and the animals are
slow to awake
because of it...
still,
it is morning and
a new day has begun...
the sounds of activity far off
permeates the silence,
creeping towards a solution that
inevitably will solve the crime and while
no crime has been committed,
it is still possible to think
that one has...
false rumors awaken the sun from
behind the clouds and
temperatures rise in excitement
as if the day had been its lover.

Hope

life...
the beginning
or
the end?
we live to find out
and die for the answer,
but,
in the meantime
we wait
we wonder
we speculate
we affirm
yet,
hope is
all we have.

Surroundings

an American flag in the distance flutters
around an unseen pole holding it up,
vehicles burning headlights pass by,
campers parked perfectly in driveways,
the smell of freshly cut grass permeates the air,
cirrus clouds off to the left stand guard
over the morning not fully begun framing
mature Magnolias full of white blossoms,
bent trees covers in green leaves tower
over the homes they protect as if nature
had not appreciated their early attitudes,
weathered deck rails circumnavigate their
territory as only their builder could imagine,
and a Siamese cat sits in his favorite chair
as the morning sun decorates him in light
oblivious to the environment around him.

Normal

the morning creeps in like a slinking cat
offering a newness different from yesterday
more vibrant and more alive as if today
was a day to be remembered but when the
eyes are fully open and adjusted they see
a similarity to all the days before and the
excitement unravels as the day unfolds
and life is once again mentally normal.

Insights

below the surface of our imagination
lurks a world of foreign possibilities,
too outrageous for us to believe and
yet realistic is their opportunities;
we exist or we do not exists in these
lands of creativity where the mind
sees everything that is not there and
nothing of what is there as it tries to
interpret an illogical reality pursuant
to previous implanted reference points;
we violate traditions of taste and decorum
plunging ourselves into the abyss of
random chaos believing that its patterns
will forecast an inevitable future of
fulfillment, peace, and prosperity.

Coffee and Cats

mornings come quickly with age
sleeps pretends to be illusive
but when it has completed its
brief sojourn, I am left with a
morning of coffee and cats
and make no mistake in the
matter, the cats always come
first before the first drop of
coffee can be poured and tasted.

Broken

undetected
most mornings pass
as we sit drinking
coffee,
pondering whatever
we see or
don't see...
looking for something
about which
to comment and
oftentimes
we overlook the
obvious;
each morning
gazing
I see its roof
broken
and blocking the
entrance,
yet,
its condition
does not deter
birds
from entering,
making homes for
family,
attracting the
interest of
others
who sit on the
top of
decks,
curious as to the
commotion.

Blue Skies

shades of blue dominate
whites intermingle
grays merge silently
windless in whispers
float nonchalantly by
as reds and pinks touch
the tops of bushes whose
roots are firmly planted
in the decades old soil
separating cities from
counties and its farmlands
in need of blue skies
and the rains that are
associated with an end
to summer and the
beginning of harvest in
the cool dawns of fall.

Above Ground

crystal clear water reflects the sky
shimmering patterns in its currents
shadows of a nearby tree wavering
rhythms undulating between shades
ripples move consistent changes from
one side to the other in an effort to
transform them into darker shades;
browns and greens guard the water
as it flows around the perimeter of
its bleached metal enclosure and
beside the gazebo that allows sight
even when it is raining and shields
the sun from too much exposure.

Continuation

dawn ends the night
sunlight ends the dawn
and we begin again
daily rituals of life
as if nothing changed
and what we step into
is simply a continuation
of what was and what
we stepped out of
the day before and all
the days before that,
perpetuating the myth
that time ceases not
unless we cease to
exist as we now are.
