Light

light pours inside here

uninterrupted but not

expected either.

How Long?

blues and blacks darken
the windows of thought,
doors removed from hinges
lay against the walls,

hardwood floors slide
under my socked feet,
bells in the distance play
night or day songs, as I
cannot readily say which,
a fan turns almost silently
providing a little fresh air
in lieu of closed windows,
illumination behold...
is gradual and not as
fulfilling as once desired,
empty tea pots rattle
on the gas stove,
coffee purrs in the corner
and I sit here...
amidst it all
wondering how long?

Occupied

an image of depression
looms in the window
in front of me as I shift
positions in my chair,
hoping (I suppose) that
it will find a way to
alter my disposition;
but, it remains with me
like a second skin,
reminding me of an
earlier time and place
where life was not as
gentle as it could have
been and my mental
outlook was shrouded in
the fear that purpose had
been given only to my
siblings leaving me out.

Candy

with each morning comes
a quiet darkness that
hangs just out-of-reach
while our vision tries to
reconcile its departure
and predict a new day,
soon to appear around us
enveloping our souls
and nurturing forgiveness
as if it were holiday candy.

Our Family

three states
three families
and farther still
with children;
China is the farthest
with no chance
of returning
and it brings criticism
to the ranks of
all those left behind
to justify
and rationalize
the decision
not to be a part of
our family.

Intent

with the mind, a
stillness appears,
serene and cat-like
in its approach
over all my senses
that have served
me well until now;
a relapse of time
and space as I
shrink from multi-
dimensional down
to three and see life
for what it has become
that was not intend
ed.

That Which Was

thoughts tend to burden,
actions rends to bore,
words seem relaxing
as if being with a whore,
but if truth be known
and reality surfaces finally
once again, we will see
a new dawn on that which
was greater than all.

Weakness

into the mist of intellectual thought,
we pursue the truth of it all,
hoping for unification and inspiration
that all is not lost to the whims of the past,
but provides a futuristic bridge
that will replace failing beliefs.

The Game

we wonder who
our leader is...

shake our heads
and wonder why?

as do many of us living overseas,
who are by far enemy and friend;

we see a man who
like a child in his behavior,

wondering how stable our
country really is
as he rants and raves
falling silent about his job
and matters of State;

we all wonder
and speculate how long he has
as if it were a game.

Imagined

acts of treason gave
us independence,
we grew strong
with each new day,
within a few brief years
our freedoms brought
us wealth beyond our
wildest imaginations;
we were heroes,
not the villains we
were portrayed to be;
in time, the rest of the world
looked in our direction
for guidance and redirection
and it was us who ended
wars and brought our
world to a perfect state.

For Public Consumption

tentative thoughts
cat-like in their approach
arise out of nowhere
clawing at my mind
to be released
without review
in a effort to catch
the timid public
who runs every which way
from their responsibilities.

Culprits

thoughtless and provoked, we stand

on the corners of our observations,

and wonder how our country could

have ever ended up this way without

seeing ourselves as the culprits of it.

Pits

without mercy, we
stumble, fall deeper into
the pits of our lives.

Encouraged

we are encouraged to live
then encouraged to die
and in between it all
we are encouraged to work
for the good of it all since
the whole needs its parts,
and it parts need to belong
at least for a while until
a newer, more versatile part
is created, then the old one is
discarded for the sake of the whole.

Lights

light above the horizon is
always there when I awake
and I wonder if it ever left
but know that it did since
I sleep in complete darkness;

bursts of sunlight hidden
from my view hit the ground
repeatedly like a war zone
of spectrum light that we
walk through unharmed
and are fully aware that
when the sun is above our
heads, it is time to eat and
all else is entirely forgotten.

Application

the light of truth fades
as it becomes legal and
less spoken or written,
and is acted upon as if
it were a darkened force
of  pure enlightenment
entering the atmosphere
that is still above the
minds of those who pay
the bills and those who
perceive freedom as if
it were an app on a
smart phone that cannot
be easily uninstalled.

Holy War

it is a holy war we fight these days
Christians against the world of believers
whose crime is the worship incorrectly;
it is a battle to the end of time as we know it to be
with no remorse and no second chances
for a so-called redemption of faith;
it is a war of attitudes and emotional strength
and words that can no longer heal
since they are spoken to destroy.

Older than Age

numbing fingertips are the norm
for a person of my age and I should
consider myself lucky that both
hands are not this way in the mornings;
extra weight about the middle in the norm
for a person of my age and I should be
thankful it is not my entire body that
has acquired all this lovely extra weight;
narrow mindedness seems to be the norm
for a person of my age and I should be
thankful that I am left with a little
respect for all my thoughts and experiences;
caged in environments are the norm
for a person of my age and I should be
thankful for all the years I have left.

intercessions

how cruelly we bend the
light of truth but never
the light of day as we
tend to the business of
State that so often
occupies our blank
nights while we project
ourselves into the world
that has no limitations
visible or otherwise.

Skepticism

dead and buried are the
thoughts I had when
younger as if I were
meant to have them just
as I was meant to have
all my thoughts of today;
my mind is not my own
nor is this body that I
rent for a few decades
until my real body is
finally given to me like
a reward of sorts for
all my patient skepticism.

Awakening

a street lamp pierces
the night from across
the way and appears
as a reflection in my
mirrored mind, seen
only in the face of the
door that opens into
my soul and sings
its songs of nightly
goodbyes with all
the awakening birds.

Springtime

open your eyes
shine on us like never before
                                             give us life
                                                         give us growth
                                                                              in purposeful surroundings;
                                 leave us free
                                           and permanent
                                                       to be whatever and
                                                                 allow our splendor to
                                                                                             shine back on you.

Fears

each window has been
painted black by the night
only to have it washed away
by the bright light of day,
and from these darkened
glasses worn for protection,
we see reflections of our
own glimmering fears.

Opportunities

darkness betrays the night
as daylight peeks through
its black defenses again,
offering us a new day and
a new deal on the old one
that many perceived as lost
until it had found its way
back from the dead, reminding
us of opportunities not taken.

Mothering

the mother
of our mother
mothers us,
and we wonder
how long
it will be
before our mother's
mother stops
the mothering
and we are left
alone again.

gods

in the midst of controversy
and turmoil, we lift up our
thoughts to all the gods we
know are true and can be
seen working on our behalf,
and who are not hidden away,
waiting for us to decide if
we want to try and find them.
