A Morning Crime

the morning sun hides behind the clouds
I know not why...
the coolness of the morning prevails,
and the animals are
slow to awake
because of it...
still,
it is morning and
a new day has begun...
the sounds of activity far off
permeates the silence,
creeping towards a solution that
inevitably will solve the crime and while
no crime has been committed,
it is still possible to think
that one has...
false rumors awaken the sun from
behind the clouds and
temperatures rise in excitement
as if the day had been its lover.

Hope

life...
the beginning
or
the end?
we live to find out
and die for the answer,
but,
in the meantime
we wait
we wonder
we speculate
we affirm
yet,
hope is
all we have.

Surroundings

an American flag in the distance flutters
around an unseen pole holding it up,
vehicles burning headlights pass by,
campers parked perfectly in driveways,
the smell of freshly cut grass permeates the air,
cirrus clouds off to the left stand guard
over the morning not fully begun framing
mature Magnolias full of white blossoms,
bent trees covers in green leaves tower
over the homes they protect as if nature
had not appreciated their early attitudes,
weathered deck rails circumnavigate their
territory as only their builder could imagine,
and a Siamese cat sits in his favorite chair
as the morning sun decorates him in light
oblivious to the environment around him.

Normal

the morning creeps in like a slinking cat
offering a newness different from yesterday
more vibrant and more alive as if today
was a day to be remembered but when the
eyes are fully open and adjusted they see
a similarity to all the days before and the
excitement unravels as the day unfolds
and life is once again mentally normal.

Insights

below the surface of our imagination
lurks a world of foreign possibilities,
too outrageous for us to believe and
yet realistic is their opportunities;
we exist or we do not exists in these
lands of creativity where the mind
sees everything that is not there and
nothing of what is there as it tries to
interpret an illogical reality pursuant
to previous implanted reference points;
we violate traditions of taste and decorum
plunging ourselves into the abyss of
random chaos believing that its patterns
will forecast an inevitable future of
fulfillment, peace, and prosperity.

Coffee and Cats

mornings come quickly with age
sleeps pretends to be illusive
but when it has completed its
brief sojourn, I am left with a
morning of coffee and cats
and make no mistake in the
matter, the cats always come
first before the first drop of
coffee can be poured and tasted.

Broken

undetected
most mornings pass
as we sit drinking
coffee,
pondering whatever
we see or
don't see...
looking for something
about which
to comment and
oftentimes
we overlook the
obvious;
each morning
gazing
I see its roof
broken
and blocking the
entrance,
yet,
its condition
does not deter
birds
from entering,
making homes for
family,
attracting the
interest of
others
who sit on the
top of
decks,
curious as to the
commotion.

Blue Skies

shades of blue dominate
whites intermingle
grays merge silently
windless in whispers
float nonchalantly by
as reds and pinks touch
the tops of bushes whose
roots are firmly planted
in the decades old soil
separating cities from
counties and its farmlands
in need of blue skies
and the rains that are
associated with an end
to summer and the
beginning of harvest in
the cool dawns of fall.

Above Ground

crystal clear water reflects the sky
shimmering patterns in its currents
shadows of a nearby tree wavering
rhythms undulating between shades
ripples move consistent changes from
one side to the other in an effort to
transform them into darker shades;
browns and greens guard the water
as it flows around the perimeter of
its bleached metal enclosure and
beside the gazebo that allows sight
even when it is raining and shields
the sun from too much exposure.

Continuation

dawn ends the night
sunlight ends the dawn
and we begin again
daily rituals of life
as if nothing changed
and what we step into
is simply a continuation
of what was and what
we stepped out of
the day before and all
the days before that,
perpetuating the myth
that time ceases not
unless we cease to
exist as we now are.
