Returned

feelings, no longer sea
worthy, lay on the deck
like freshly caught tuna
waiting to be processed;
yet, limitations known and
respectfully requested that
we be returned to the sea.

Long Ago

I am tainted by your
memory and all the
memories not allowed
to surface for fear of
betrayal since there is
nothing left to feel for you.

Bodies

our bodies are betrayed
by gentle, quiet spasms
fueled with touch and closeness,
held together with desires that
erupt from illicit passions,
buried deep in mental cavities,
extracted periodically when
objections are overruled.

Counter Intuitive

darkness surrounds us
a sarcophagus of night,
expelling screams of light as
easy as breathing out air,
after extracting oxygen;

morbid curiosities awake us
from a profound sleep brought
about by forced moments
before death is silenced by
the vibrations of chilling sounds;

with the agility of passing trains,
we lumber to our destination,
hoping to find a cure for our
previously acquired affliction
from soft coffins of silence;

retina displays offer counter
intelligence with German precision,
pushing boundaries of
caffeine-depleted minds until
its black silkiness embraces us.

Recollections of Previous Encounters

undetected signs
flash warning signs
throughout my body,
tensing to your touch
no long familiar;

probing indifference
betrays my desire as
I respond - your
unwilling partner,
provoking silence then
noise between us;

mounting confusion
reaches a climax that
seems pre-mature if
it were not for all our
previous recollections;

mermaids of pleasure
jump in and out of
brackish ponds hoping
our love will rekindle
and they will once again
be asked to navigate;

OpEds never written
imagine our distress,
rewriting scenes,
while wishing we had
never tried to rewrite.

your natural breasts prevent
me from hearing correctly as I
lay my head between them and
your untrimmed hair tickles my
butt each time you adjust your legs;

covered in oil, we slip through
each other's grasp as our softness
electrifies our forgotten senses;

turning, our fronts are aligned, but
you must pull me up your body
to complete the passion we both
anticipate while hoping that
I do not get stuck again inside.

early to bed
early to rise
is my modus operandi
but early to bed
late to rise is
what I've grown into,
hiding from myself
because
we cannot get along.

cats walk with clarity and precision

around the small, fenced-in deck

preventing them from rogue behavior;

silence is altered by the sounds of

butterflies winging overhead, hovering

as if unable to determine the cat's nature;

nude, angelic creatures float by, pushed by

an unseen, silent current inside an ocean of air,

smiling, as they move effortlessly overhead;

dark clouds bring the rains, washing away

my imaginations, leaving me with a

clear but empty mind from which I must

no doubt attempt to build again.

meanwhile,
we sit in subjugated poses,
legs spread wide,
eyes opened fully,
shaved and waiting,
seeking no pleasure
from the passing wind
that brings us back
for more...

sandstone habitats stand silent

against the sun;

amidst each other's presence,

they savor innocent virtues

in a somewhat erect fashion,

not realizing imaginations of visitors,

whose countless photographs have

left them in irreparable decay;

serpents slither and slide through

open windows seeking escape,

sensing redemption on the other side,

only to find seas of sandstone

sitting crooked in the setting sun.

Passing Time

a pot-bellied vase sits on the glass
of a round coffee table while my
meandering thoughts appear then
disappear, leaving me with this
somewhat boring line-of-sight residue;
lace curtains with green tops seem
to guard all my windows and different
styles of grandfather clocks form the
walls of my cube-like prison, none of
which shed any light on the correct time,
as I presume this self-exile will endure
the night and I will be left, as always,
with brief catnaps of nightmarish similarity;
an image of drowning sits in front of me
like a nude prostitute needing sex and willing
to offer discounts to her first ten customers;
but, I am without coin in my pocket and the
advice of a Dutch Uncle rings in my head,
who said, "wisdom cures nothing but
serves only to pass the time..."

Summer Heat

summer heat cools my desire to be outside,
moisture in the air drips unwillingly to the ground,
felines murmur cries from window sills and fans
stir the air with the reliability of an ocean
wave crashing onto an unprotected shore;
moments turn into minutes and those turn into hours
and are no different inside than outside in the heat
but with a somewhat tolerable breeze, I suppose;
sounds of summer remain outside unheard while
we wrestle with conversations of mental castration inside,
hoping for a thunderstorm to provide a brief interlude,
and all thoughts and eyes are turned towards the north
with the need of rescue in our unspoken gazes, realizing
the path of least resistance has already been taken.

on different shores we
find ourselves living,
doing much the same each day,
saying much the same words
in different languages,
dressing much the same and
enjoying much the same leisure;
and yet, our governments
pursue a different course
and we must decide to follow
or leave...  but, go where?

Turtle Nesting, Jupiter Island, FL

Westerly winds follow inland currents,
Crashing bedtime waves push up the shoreline,
Moon beams offer filtered illumination,
Summer's mood sits with us in silence
breathing in the humid air with necessary trepidations;
Sea mist blows off the surf - a fine mist of fog
through which a glistening shell emerges and
dark, leathery fins reach out to grasp the sand;
Slowly, she heaves and hauls her massive weight
towards her journey's end...  only to be defeated by
the incline of the protective dune in front of her;
With forceful uncertainty, she pivots her hulky
body back towards the brackish water from
whence she came...  and, as I stand there motionless
and speechless, realize she will one day try again.

I saw you outside today
all bright and yellow
and watched you
as you rose above
those reluctant clouds
who tried in vain
to hold you down;
I saw you outside today
after 6 days of morning
heat that kept me inside,
as I watched you from
behind protective glasses.

behind the romance of the island,
is the wealth that pays for it all;
a new group of robber barons who
share their spoils with each other behind
tall green fences of tropical vegetation,
closed off to all but a few; but,
even these new titans will never control
the ocean and her waters or the
solar energies that tans their bodies;
not on this island or any other
will they possess her bounty for long or
take anything more from her that
has not been first, willingly given.

Mornings appear without hesitation
while the sun hides behind clouds on the
horizon and westerlies blow yesterday's
coolness steady, postponing the humid
rains to fall; still, mornings are the best here
once the snowbirds have left and
we have the world to ourselves again;
bright orange streaks throw blackened grey
crows squawking at seagulls and the pelicans
keep them at bay while the westerlies
continue to blow steady and cool.

how still the ocean seems
this morning after
it has taken so many lives;
were these the same waters our ancestors
saw when they were sitting here?
how benign the dark water looks
as sun sparkles and dances on its surfaces,
laying down a golden walkway for us
to walk upon towards oblivion;
I wonder if this same sun has sparkled
like this on previous mornings?
how gentle the humid air blows coolness
across my body and face,
calming my outlook temporarily
easing my morning after consciousness.

If our eyes are windows to the world,
then our minds must be  secure

retrieves data when our windows are dirty.

hiding ourselves from others;
we dwell in places of the night,
that protect us from onlookers;
we dwell in places of the day, so
the dark can be washed out of us.

the silent, breathless dawning
of a new day leaves one in awe
along the tropical shores of the Atlantic,
mesmerized by the ever glistening waters
in perpetual motion, rolling
southeasterly blowing
long before the blue skies were watching over;
sailors and serpents navigated these seas together,
hunting and pirating in blissful ignorance
of their future and now no more do either,
replaced by wealthy shacks of multi colors
and swimming pools instead of sea stories
that capture imaginations of many a lad...
now buried in the sand or washed away
by the tides to other distant lands
where progress still resides in dialogues.

On this
5th full day
our vacation here on
Jupiter Island, we have begun
to relax and
let our feelings
explore the minds of
others with whom we
want to share our lives.

We hear what we want to hear,
See what we want to see,
Say what is on our minds,
and, sometimes think conceptually;
but, we constantly feel pain
only afterwards when the culprit
is beyond all our other senses.

I can see a hundred feet
but not a hundred yards
and what I know to be
may not be there at all;
there are no instruments
to guide my eye sight
and no radar to warn but
instincts once powerful forces
of nature remain unseen;
harbingers of life yell retreat
while a cat's curiosities
move forward on padded steps
gliding silently like a boat
on a serenely smooth lake
of water vapors and currents;
I can see a hundred yards
but no further now as life opens
up her eyes to another day,
and my imagination is once
again replaced by the familiar
taste of Arabian coffee.

palms stand in awe of each other
elegant and majestic,
nodding approval in the tropical breeze;
clouds and shadows cover the horizon
like a blanket of apprehension
covers a sailor's first voyage;
adobe prisons hold their captives inside
with promises of cooler air and wading
pools keep their feet and ankles clean;
the sun doesn't leave here today as it
did yesterday or might do tomorrow
and the humidity offers no counseling
for the elderly or the sick or those who
have chosen to live here year round.

how fleeting is the visit

pushed by the wind voluntarily,
discovering adventures and sites
that will never be retained as
death visits when the light fades.

dawn announces her beginning
with a red sky sunrise hidden
behind the dark clouds of a storm;
from behind the moisture stained windows
we witness the unveiling of light
and another green day of life;
palms sway in the breeze
their sturdy trunks awkwardly dance
as if learning for the first time;
lizards scurry across the tile deck
seeking shelter on instinct,
lap pool quiver, riddled by the rain;
paradise reminded once again
as to its fragile balance with nature.

currents of wind four miles high
speed past my wind tunnel seat
at minus four leaving no footprint
blocking out the sun on their
way south for a vacation;
valleys with no roads merge together
and mountain top greenery appears
like the spine of some pre-historic
serpent who was too tired to move further;
spots of houses dot the landscape
while descending close and closer
to their points of origins;
the sound of wind passing by my window
leaves me in awe of what it must be like
to travel time as one travels the skies.

moments fly by less quickly up here, so
younger at the end than when we started;
dense fog with no visibility but above it all
there seems to be nothing at all below us;
blankets of thermal dynamics cushion our every move
preventing us from shuddering aimlessly into another world;
white velvet softness drifts by like clouds
that have lost all resistance in keeping their shapes,
descending into bumpy nothingness with eyes
closed as if we were still in the womb.
