Making Twain

we are never rewarded
by the truth we keep,
but by those we hide,
undisclosed to those
who handle reality;
we withhold non lies
and manipulate lives
as easily as sitting in
Sunday pews singing and
passing collection plates,
as that eases our guilt
each time a coin sounds
marking the river's depth.
