Transformation

when we were young
and somewhat foolish,
we had no cares or worries
except for the war and
knowing a lot died each day,
and we tried our best
not to be one of them;
our youth provided us with
questions we could not answer
nor a role model to follow,
but gave us rules to break
which we did ever so willingly;
our hearts were full of love
and our minds musical lyrics
while our actions distorted both,
demonstrating for the sake thereof
even if not our own idea;
we were cursed and abandoned
and sometimes jailed, but we
never forgot our beliefs or
from where they originated,
and in a feeble attempt to rebuild,
we became refreshed and renewed
not knowing what would follow;
we became one of them,
talking and dressing like them,
conservative views like them,
pacified morals and beliefs
that were not our own and
worst of all, never realizing
there may have been,
for everyone,
another way to transform.
