Unexpected

righteousness
shields us from the light
a prevailing veil of
darkness covers us
like wedding lace;
we see what we need to see
think what we need to think
when the unexpected happens
and we have no more
cheeks to turn...
quid pro quo skims
the ground like sliding
rocks on a pond,
believing in what we see
or want to see as
righteousness shields
us from the light.
