light pours in and rolls around
like the last little bit of juice
in the glass that is in one's hand;
morning peers though the window
like a Peeping Tom, hoping to
see me in that which I was born;
tales of gladiators float through
my imagination as the day creeps
into the night and the night allows
me to forget another boring day.

Spring Sprung
a dull blue sky set the stage
for the unfolding day and all
its springtime elements as
trees bloom and flowers grow
and rains fall down lightly
and pollen spreads throughout
like an epidemic on course
to ruin lives in the thousands
so warmer days can roll by.

Gone
little by little
the days grow warm
and lengthen
into the summer sun
and we,
as guests,
share what we can
until
it is all gone.

Retarded
the days, they blur together
which day of the week?
what time of day?
when did I awaken?
what did I do?
and, when each day is over,
I know the next one
will always be the same,
as that's the way it is
when one is retired.

Time Out
distant sounds outside
cats appear at the window
inside guardians
wanting out to fight
or chase away,
but, return not they will
until checking out the sights,
deciding which route to take
the next time they are released,
so, inside they remain
and window gazers they become
until aggressions are taken
out on each other and in
time out rooms they are found.

Compass
there is no true compass bearing
relative to our universe, nor is
there an up or down, left or right,
or even a diagonal unless we have
a point-of-reference by which we
can measure our current position; so,
why do we need to know which way
into which we might be heading?
we are disoriented emotionally in
all our feelings whether they are
expressed or held inside, yet, we
attempt to explore relationship
as if they can become the compass
for the rest of our directional lives.

Hours
sleep betrays me and
I linger in bed for hours
hoping to awaken but
my eyes never open
until the next day when
I realize I have missed
eight hours of daylight,
becoming more depressed
that before because I
know I will never get
all of those hours back.

Self Evident
self evident is the truth
by which we live our lives,
not what is logical
(or its counterpart)
since deception abounds
and false gods trample
on our good intentions;
we roam like vagabonds
though the countryside
of our mental landscapes
searching for peace-of-mind
that always seems to surface
when around other people.

Thoughts
disloyalty strikes
a pose in all of us from
roots of selfishness.

aspirations come

Birthday
A year ago today, and a year ago before
that
and on and on, this day has been
celebrated
but never in the fashion it has been
today or
will be in the years to come since our
lives
have become intertwined but I will tell
you
this and to the bank it can be taken,
your
birthday will be a celebration like
never
before since we are ones always looking
forward to those possibilities that may
have
been only a twinkle in your eye and
when
ignited with love will be felt every
day or
until your birthday comes around again.

Graduation
For twelve years we have
sat in uncomfortable seats
and listened to those who
claimed to know more, and
if we continue our way on
this path, we will
continue
this way for another four;
math and science, history
and French and all those
silly classes in between
and little do we know how
important each and every
one of them will be for
the rest of our natural
lives and more if we
really
want to be success in
life;
it is not so much the
patience
and the tolerance we
endured,
but the knowledge we
acquired
which has added to our
value,
soon... very soon... we
will
graduate and be free and
clear
forces that held our feet
to the
ground and with this new
found sense of freedom, we
have so many choice that
we can make, not
knowing
really which on is the best,
really which on is the best,
but if we fall or loose
our step,
it is the journey home
that is
always there for us to
take;
so, spread your wings and
take to the sky and fly
where
your heart and soul may
want
to take you because you
have
earned this flight and all
of the
universe is yours to
experience.

Fresh
of sin and doubt but
our desires as they tell
us what we have become
and who we are, instead
of what society wants
us to believe today;
and, in so doing we keep
life fresh and clean like
a new carpet or a just
cleaned one like home.

New Ones
slipping away into the day
a subtle night disappears
and on the other side
reappears as if by magic
and dances well into the
wee hours of the passing
day as it prolongs its
catlike movements in
favor of new ones again.

From 1984
#6
Caught,
in the reality
of feelings,
our closeness
while our love
whispers
its desires
and
quiet emotions
are allowed
to softly
remain;
perhaps, our
caring brings us
too close
and
aware, as
misplaced
sensitivities
age our love
like wine
and,
our touch
gently caresses
the essence
of our being
and
our embrace
draws us
into one...
kissing,
fulfills lost
passions.

From 1984
outside, the air
is still and musky,
distant lights flash
when fall announces
its dominance;
daylight yields to a
colorless, benign evening
and we,
with good intentions,
leave behind our
similarities in neat, little
piles of today's journeys,
while our differences
warm us...
for a cold, bitter winter
and our eyes
hold the true images
of our expectations.

From 1985
inside our feelings live
in abundance
tiny delicate flowers
whose occasional beauty
releases sensuous vignettes
of our passion and
its expression of fragrances
brought about by ecstasies
and memories of
yesterday's romantically
blind thoughts of
our bodies...
our souls...
in a unique garden
of everlasting love.

From 1984
we are yesterday's future
and tomorrow's past
until time wipes clean
our memories and
we are surrounded
by the frustrations
we created and
the sensations by which
we are joined;
we are betrayed
by our eyes,
whose longing sets the
limitations and the
barriers that protects the
distance we must keep.

From 1984
#2
even in my dreams,
your image appears
as if
some magnet is trying
to draw me back
into your consciousness;
your voice drifts...
in soft, flowing patterns,
awakening my senses
as if
and our fantasy was
us being parted;
alive and real,
I feel your touch on me,
reaching out to embrace the
intense passion holding us
victims to our desires.

From 1984
#1
even though the new roads
we journey take us in
separate directions, we
fondly remember
a common road that
brought our lives together,
and it is from this road
that we shall never forget
what we allowed
ourselves to feel...
to share...
one day crumble,
it is through the
strength of our love,
the power of what we meant
to each other, that a
positive memory of
our friendship will
always continue to survive.

From 1984
we superimpose our wills
on each other like two
underexposed negatives;
one supersedes the other
false pretenses bypass
obligations and individuality
replaces one's loyalty;
we succeed in failing
to be what the other needs
like two children whose
love-hate relationship
seesaws indiscriminately
while our testing of wills
has some kind of mysterious
bond on our weak love.

Windy Wednesday
windy Wednesday wanders into Thursday
and rains pour down into the valley
with
intentions while we hide inside
dwellings
hoping the tornadoes stay away a little
longer
and the calm after the storm remains
solid;
rain water gathers on the ground in
puddles,
Trees bend over more crookedly than
before,
leaves cover the grassy green lands
darkly,
dawn leaves us wondering about it all
and
we know that Spring has opened it
doors.

Aftermath
the devastation abounds
life lives on the edges
and no animals around;
hollow trees overturned
strong limbs on the ground
outside furniture scrambled
like eggs in a frying pan;
turtles scamper across the road
recklessly watching the traffic
and birds peck on the windows
hoping I'll close the curtains.

Life's Disease
I am saved from the demons who,
once released, might do me harm
and as the feeling of relief surges
through my veins, I am reminded
of the serenity of life accompanying
the various stages of death that one
feels when enduring the toxins
that have been injected into the
body in order to keep it safe and
free from the elements of decay
associated with its daily disease.

Japanese Maple
inside...
on a branch...
of the newly flowered
Japanese Maple,
a male Cardinal sits;
his orange beak
prunes his feathers
just as the Maple was
pruned weeks before;
perhaps...
a nest...
the bird couple will make
or perhaps...
they will approach
another tree
not so close
to the road offering
greater protection
and isolation;
curious...
it is to me...
that just a few weeks ago
I considered
this Japanese Maple tree
and in my hesitation,
thought it best
to let nature
take its course again
as a few years ago
a late frost had
just about killed it
we all had thought.

Chores
chores that need to be done
and while there is no one here
that can complete them, these
tasks now fall to me... so, my
desire to sleep in is overwhelming
and my need to postpone enhanced,
but, if these tasks are not completed
then who will keep us this house?

Hope
adventures loom on the horizon of the
day
when I witness life that has passed me
by,
and all these new challenges are
brought
about because there is no place to
hide;
life seeps out of me in ringlets of
red, as
my courage is found on the bathroom
floor
and the drugs that have been put into
me
are the only ones that can even the
score;
covered in white linens, I lay in
puddles
of thought that prevent my slumber and
dreams remain just in the back of my
mind
as hope seems to escape out the back
door.
