Falling in Line

fall colors
fall weather
fall clothes
fall minds
slip on the weather
as it kisses goodbye
at the summer
and the lazy
hazy days of
extenuating
circumstances.

Riding Out

cool winds blow warm
in September,
waters tremble around
the edges,

sun penetrates the wind
leaving us mellow
as we sit in silence
by the pool,
imagining the horrors
South of us
riding out the storm.

Coiled

Straight up NOON
and a cool wind blows
the hot away yet
the sun seems to remain
and reasonable doubt
lays on the path of justice
like a coiled snake
waiting to strike at
whatever walks by.

Surrounded

I am surrounded by my home
my animals as well as
my thoughts, all encompassing;
I am surrounded by my landscaped yard
full of trees and bushes that
offer me colorful security;
I am surrounded by my gazebo
that hovers over me and all the chairs
underneath that encircle me;
I am surrounded by my neighbors
who are surrounded by their neighbors
and by communities surrounding communities;
I am surrounded by myself
and an ever present awareness of
who I am at any given moment;
I am surrounded by the love of family
and the love of their families and by
by all these other families that came before;
I am surrounded by God and His creation
for as long as He allows and then
I will be surrounded by Him forever.

Just Begun

sparkling waters
lightly churning
move in opposite directions
as they pump and wind,

are placed in
compromising positions;
I sit and watch the spectacle
unfold and "real time,"
and wince at the sun's
reflection when it
penetrates my eyes;
there are shades of clarity
in my pool this
comfortable fall day
and like always wonder
how long I have before
my summer dies once again;
sparkling water
a warm sun
comfortable clothes
and a life that
has just begun.

Just A Theory

we are a world of opposites
don't you agree?
black or white
rich or poor
tall or short
fat or thin
belief or no belief
hope or no hope
faith or no faith
happy or sad
laughing or crying
depressed or manic
sight or blinded
giving or taking
busy or lazy
healthy or ill
if you do not agree
then you are my opposite
and have no choice
but to accept my theory.

Our World

our world is so unkind
unforgiving with all its memories
lasting hatred that never dissipates
lingering doubts of hope
yet to be received and
mindless following of leaders
without the least bit of desire to
even think again for one's self;

our world is officially divided between:
good and evil
right and wrong
truth and justice
black and white
have and have not
and we care not for change because,
change never happens...


our world is basically good
with basically good people living in it
with basically good thoughts
as to how a good life should unfold,
yet, there are some discontented souls
who do not fundamentally agree, so,
sadly our world remains as it is and
will continue to remain this way
for a long, long time to come.

Walls

walls of doubt
stand in between
our future
and our past,
realizing not
how they impact
each other;

walls of protection
stand in between
us and our
neighbors, knowing
they prevent
cross contamination;



walls of love
prevent us from
living in a world
of loneliness, but,
cannot protect
us from false
love that is ever
present in our
world of walls.

Ignoring

clocks on the wall
give no time,
they stopped years ago
and now just
adorn the walls like paintings,
time is of little concern
to those of us
who are dying and
we are all dying
sooner or later
and we ignore it.

Waiting

the calm before the storm
waiting for the scan
waiting for the results
waiting for the treatment
my whole life could be
turned upside down
in a heartbeat or less
and I can do nothing
except make the most of
each day I am alive.

Delivered

dead and buried

are we all,

at the moment

of our births,

never asking for

it to be so 

or for it to be

take away soon;

and yet,

it happens everyday

and without 

permission as if

our will and

self-determination

is of no concern;

and, accept it all

is what we must

do as that seems

to be our main

purpose in this

strange world

to which we all

have been sent.

tired eyes grin

at what they have

encountered or seen

while life passes

us all by in favor

of new innocents

who have just begun,

in the hope that

a more dramatic

approach can be

taken and a higher

percentage of success

achieved from those

who know no better.

I have played,

to make life's

purpose a

little more

rewarding;

discovered.

death comes easy

others regret

inside your life
and wonder

of thought will
destroy all

we live

but there is something
beyond the light
not seen
not heard
not felt inside;

we love
we eat the fruit
cook the meat
and wonder why
we have been given
such a blue sky
beyond the light.

all around
foreboding...
no reflections
in my eyes
of things to come,
no source
to be turned
off or on,
no feet,
no hands,
no face
can be seen;
I think it
all at once,
then calm.

Futuring

moments after we have lived
a thousand years, we discover,
in our frustrations, that nothing
has changed and valiantly
realize that nothing ever will;
we are mindful of nothing else
as we turn our backs on the
future and attempt to burn the
past from our memory cores,

thinking we have not just been

fooled but we have been used

to create a life of which we

could never ever be a part.

silently, we
embark on life
a pleasure cruise of sorts
on a one person vessel
traveling the rivers
of forgotten minds,
filtering out
the memories we
do not like
in favor of the ones we do,
in the hopes that
our life will be
more enjoyable.

Perishing

age redefines us all
transcending as we do
from young to old
and back again to young;
life flows through us
meandering as it does
through time and space
and infinity if it exists;
we question our survival
we question our basic nature
we question our thoughts
and oftentimes our feelings
but in the end we perish
just like all other life.

there is no basket
or funnel of time
through which we
descend but a
road or path that
is long for some
short for others
but leading to the
same place, our
final destination.

Winning

fortune follows the fortunate
who claim they were only
prepared and if others had
been as well then there would
have been absolutely no
room for anyone at the top;

it is a matter of timing and
the mitigation of all risks as
the focused are even more so
while the ones they destroyed
were caught sipping wine and
having pre-mature celebrations
for victories never received.

names are assigned
within a few years
all is forgotten
by everyone except
those who have the names
and life continues
while those who have the name
relish in the thoughts
of who they are
considering not how
they had become nor
from what they had arrived
or escaped considering
what their stories might be.

the door shuts
another opens
minds fail
thoughts buried
weight accumulates
on bodies dead already
we see
we hear
we are surrounded
the insecurities
of our own death
instead of life.

darkness prevails outside

inside there is light

warmth or cool

depending upon the climate

as we maintain

and delight in the life

we have been given,

since it is unique and

only happens once.

do they not?
our beliefs
our values
our codes of honor
and ethics;
we live in peril
of division
yet are divided
nonetheless
into discreet groups
of work, play,
and family;
difference unite,
do they not?

Pillars of Hate

sun drenched opinions
flow like moonshine
in this southern hemisphere
of our in-unified States,
and the two hundred plus
years of wisdom that we

have supposedly accumulated
from our ancestors, who
were not as squeaky cleans
as we had first imagined;
we have grown beards of hate
that cannot be shaven
unless we violate our civil
rights as there are numerous
online educated lawyers
standing in northern wings
just waiting for another
battle of useless division.

Sunday Morning

early morning shadows
cast ominous opinions
throughout the mountains
and the caves of my mind
while sunless, cloudy skies
cool the Southern environment
to which I have grown accustomed,
like trees taking root in crevices,
unlikely to survive yet they do;
and when the sun appears,
I am ready for its heat and
all the controversy that it
brings to my doorsteps.

Mixed Blessings

there are no pleasure anymore

but there are things that I enjoy;

there are no late nights or early

mornings working without sleep;

there is an appreciation for what

I see but not an understanding;

there is a raised cup of thankfulness

for have lived as long as I have.

the end of life is
          right around the corner
and, I wonder how
          fast these years will move;

will I die gracefully
          in a bed of white linen
or, will it be rough
          and tumble in hospital?
family and friends
          will not know as my
wishes are for anonymity
          at all costs so it will
be alone is some obscure place
          just as I entered here.

Time

back before the dawn

when life first began

an eerie silence flowed

through the darkness of

the universe and no

life as we believe it to be

existed anywhere at all;

it was in this dawn of

silence that darkness gave

way to light and we could

see all that was before us,

and were amazed at the

vast emptiness of time.

Nature

life bends its will to

nature as if it were
parent and child but
in reality, nature has
dominance over life,
even though it was
originally perceived
otherwise since nature
was here long before
life was ever conceived.
