being at the beach
or in the mountains
or in the desert
or in the rolling grasses
of a lush valley,
life catches us by
surprise as it unfolds
time around us and
our youth fades away
more quickly than it
had arrived, leaving
us wrinkled and wise
but unable to retrieve
any of what's gone.
