Hummingbirds

plastic owls tied to iron rods
guard the entrance haphazardly,
all who desires...  enters...
deck boards pale with age
dismiss recent construction.
carpenter bees find new places
at which to bore their holes,
old one filled in with mesh.
overhanging trees from a
neighbor's yard invade
disturbing the careful balance
on feng shui, casting chaos
on a tranquil environment.
lighthearted gestures conveyed
barriers between us widen,
lifting out the noise, leaving
us with blessed silence...
a fence of closely planted shrubs
works best of all, allowing
only nature's little one to
move freely about - rabbits,
squirrels, chipmunks and a
plethora of squawking birds...
only the hummingbirds have
failed to return this year.
