A Day in the Life

behind the entrance
to the Brownstone,
is a hallway;
at the end of the hallway
is a gilded cage
in which the owner lives;

every morning,
precisely at sunrise,
the owner leaves the cage,
and every evening,
precisely at sunset,
the owner returns to the cage;
no one knows
what happens in between,
and no one cares,
as long as the rent is paid;
but somewhere,
someone of insignificance reads
that much evil was done today,
and that the local area
is better off because of it;
and, we all thank
our lucky stars that
the evil was not done to us.
