January 1988 - page 1

I think about my report
I have plenty of time but
it will not be impressive,
and if that bothers the
folks at the capital...
then, I'll be gone.

you obstructed my view
I was just right in case
she appeared...
I cannot accept your apologies
and I have nothing to fear.

If ten were written each day
each month...  I would have
files overflowing...  an
annualized concept of thoughts.

I saw her today and imagined us making love,
her expressions as we enjoyed each other's passion,
tireless efforts and a simple touch
holding and feeling her close
being part of her and me deep inside.

you seemed to look at me
in that same way that I
have been looking at you;
I want to blow a kiss of
my thoughts to you...
I'm afraid to want you
too much to say goodbye.

my thoughts are with
you even if all it is...
is just your friendliness.

I want to make love
with you but only
if it happens naturally.

the artic cold inhibits my motivation
as it does all my movements...
my thoughts are fixed on summer.

I look back on the things I could have done
discussing how I would have been with myself,
we reach no conclusions only theoretical assumptions.

and the strangers who pass through my door
are different from me in age and appear to
be younger or older in appearance...  and we
write their credentials on trash bags,
a change from their designer jeans...  and we
are put at odds...  these strangers who
only know themselves...  and through
my door each day freely pass into my world.

Poetic Muses -- January 1987

we walk silently through our dreams
away from the reality of daily nightmares,
into an early morning darkness when
breathing slows and eyelids twitch to
the pulse of our own heartbeat...
its pounding rhythms pumping away
life in short spasms...
we sit at the end of a long bridge watching
the ships underneath,
wishing they would slow down long
enough for us to jump aboard...
we sleep restlessly now...
after many years in and out of
each other's arms...
another ship passes our frontier
and through telepathy,
a new chapter unfolds...
a backlog of unordered fantasies
are free for the taking...
a belief in Peter Pan and the end
denies its beginning...
we wake early expecting to see
to be something different and
each day always begins on time
with the buzz of the alarm clock.

outside the air is soft and still
the birds play hide-n-seek
through cut branches
waiting to be burned,
the weather report calls for
freezing rain and the sky is
its typical pale blue color;
the last day of a ugly year is sunny
and a host of chores have been
put-off...  set aside...
delayed for another day,
a reluctance for a new year works
its way inside the holiday attitude
and I feel myself adding a caffeine high;
a peculiar boredom inhibits and
early morning circulation of ideas
and my days are spent in confusion;
outside another Indian Summer day
promotes its prolonged fall farewell,
inside I harbor a premonition of
a not so caring final future time.

I await an execution as the last day
of my vacation are spent writing
and searching for someone with
whom to share my feelings...
these last few days were preparation
for a hectic winter schedule yet
an anger rests deep inside
a bitter burning sensation
(a mental sunburn hurt)
because I relied on someone else
to provide my purpose...
I await my execution as I have
each year and for more years than
I care to remember...  my fate
is always the same and I postpone
my suicide when I finally feel happy.

as I wait inside the prolonged hours
of the day until next we meet, I see
you often in the memories you left,
reliving them all and deciding not
to change any...  relaxing with the
thoughts you are always with me.

long ago before this birth I lived with
many friends whose memories live
inside me now and made me who I am;
I wonder who I was back then and if
we'll ever meet again...  and, if we do
will I recognize me...  what to talk about?
will my friends still be so after all those
years without a note to let them know I'm back?
and if these friends live on like me,
new ones will I meet...  I wonder now?

from where do all these thoughts arrive
each morning while I sit (alone) and
where do they go while I work (with others)?
at first I found myself perplexed
then later amazed at how easily they (these thoughts)
connected with my daily realities...
these thoughts and feeling mix inside and
mostly the non-expressed ones are
the only ones that make it to the page.

down by the water's edge the waves
roll in and out with regularity...
we sit on a dune admiring its beauty
its persistence and its tranquility...
as if it were a teacher and we its pupils
seeking its unknown knowledge
its sophistication
its destruction;
on these shores we've been before
dressed differently
but with each other
sitting
absorbing its magic
suggesting our lives have always
been linked in some mysterious way;
it seems we know the other's thoughts
a mental bridge connecting us
and the love we gave was given before;
our touch was felt before our kisses
and long ago tasted...
somehow everything seems so familiar
so natural... so complete...  when here.

have we been lovers once
then lost and found again?
if, but once, we've walked the earth
then why is our memory so clear?
we've come today...   like before
to ask the truth and learn your knowledge
not all of it...
just the part that pertains to us,
if you spoke we could not hear,
so loudly your currents move
so unevenly your currents wash the shore,
so unnoticed your currents seem
to be moving through our lives.

a year ago we said goodbye
quit sane and civilized that
last day was for us, considering
what we knew...  and every
month we are called upon
to relive those last memories;
it hurts my love to see you now,
your body's warm to the touch
and each brief moment rekindles
the special glow reminiscent
of all that we shared...   and,
all over again the excitement
is there...  alive and vibrant...
shaking with anticipation
leaning forward gradually we
make contact...  our lips
softly kiss the cheek until
they find each other and we
become passionate...  on fire,
as our emotions are allowed
no imposed barriers at all.

he holds in his arms her softness
and she caresses him reassuringly,
what is released between them
can be shared by no other...
their feelings extend beyond a
desire to control as whimpers of
joy escapes from her mouth...
their bodies brush slightly...
touching sensitive areas
neither knew they had...
together the passion consumes
neither worried about outcomes.

into my back pocket I reach
finding a hole to be mended
and missing my wallet
jot down a mental not to myself,
too busy to be disturbed now;
down the walkway I love
and into an office I turn
to receive my daily advice;
the memo reads "remember to please,"
and I wonder if this is for today
or for tomorrow and missing the
point jot down a mental note to self.

from inside the room where action consumes
A ritual of work do I perform,
my labors are long I've don it all wrong
and needless to say I did try,
and what is the sense in talking with Rentz
it all rolls downhill anyway,
so I turned my back and got stabbed by Jack
to prepare me for heaven he claims,
I must take a pee as Joe's looking for me
and Ted's on his way out the door,
my job is so fun like time in the sun
what took me so long to get here,
if you read all the ink the bullshit it stinks
and tomorrow they'll take me away,
so to you this I say don't go all the way
let them at the top screw themselves.

beside a country crossroad
just north of sixty two
a small church stands
not too far from town
about a mile of two,
I pass by there daily
on my way to work and
it's a landmark later
when the day turns dark,
a white steeple rises above
its dingy white frame,
high above the trees
a metal cross reaches
out the the heavens...
I guess the bells ring
each Sabbath for the people
who live close by yet
look inside this Sunday
and empty seats you'll find.

"repair my broken heart," she exclaimed
her eyes showed a beauty not often seen,
if ever I want to say what I cannot
want to hold what I cannot
then I am left admiring you from a distance.

remember how long you were young
eventually learning the secret from
the backseat of a car and if you'd
ever really see that person again?
how fast changes in feelings occur
and a career was simply finding work,
always hoping someone would care.

we are taught from our parent's anxiety
to bear the guilt of idleness...
always reshuffling or rescheduling
no time for this and no time for that
no time for you and no time for me,
our lives are unevenly divided towards
work and family so that the former
always wins the race we learned,
and the price that we pay is
discovering our children as adults.

we drink the rain water from the cistern
purifying our hearts and dogs whine at
the broken water pump...  while an
angry evening peels away its protective
skin leaving us with ambivalence,
our daughter lays in bed
put to sleep by yelling nowadays
instead of bedtime stories...  I can
hear her crying in the darkness
holding back her tears
muffling the sounds of her unhappiness,
thinking she is to blame for our indifference;
I can feel the wrinkles of my own despair
and pledge to dress more appropriately,
bearing the weight of failure my
shoulders but cannot find the courage
to cure the illness...  we drink the
rain water from the cistern waiting
patiently expecting some sort of
maturity to eves drop its way into
our lives, helping us to repair and replace
worn out values or repainting the
welcome sign with an open disclaimer,
"temporarily out of order..."

my shadow and me go everywhere
on rainy days and unlike a pen pal
we communicate with thoughts
and gestures while following each
other everywhere...  it's embarrassing,
sometimes, I what what gender is
my shadow and where it goes when
I have decided I need to sleep.

a black notebook I carry
its pages hold daily comments
and it fits nicely into my
mental pocketbook...
I dare say every page has
once been written upon and
then erased to make room
for another thought...  my
memories rest comfortably
in between the lines in
black and white and may
be seen by some as nonsense,
why I keep it I do not know
except that someday these
words may be used against me
to change the way I feel.

the morning frost lays on the ground
a white blanket covering yesterday's raked leaves,
the stale smell of last night's wood stove
hangs in the air until our own smoke
eliminates the order from the room,
nature alters our habits as we shave her
frozen moisture off the windshield...
shivering until the heat warms us,
each winter we huddle in bundles
vowing a southern migration but long
for the spring instead saying goodbye
to the chills that aches to our bones.

Poetic Muses -- February 1987

we live along the outer fringes of
insanity like some border patrol
guarding an outpost that is not
worth the time to even salvage,
we live within the boundaries of
chaotic turmoil attempting to justify
and rationalize our acceptance of
the daily ordeal...  trying to put
together the pieces...  rebuild our
insanity as if the burden will let us
even assume that kind of control,
we live without hate
without love
without feelings
without friendships
yet, our frustrations have embittered
our attitudes towards each other,
we appear as victims of some
meaningless white collar crime
on exile...  refugees of a
marriage that has lost its vitality.

without the lack of chance
and the risk that life offers
more than one already has,
we would never have the
courage to alter our reality,
suiting our dream illusions
and choosing a new destiny
rather than accepting the
one already selected for us.

humility has no limitations
only a surrender to a lesser
of two ill gotten influences,
each bearing a price that
simply depends on how
much one wants to lose.

we are limited in thought
in deed and in purpose,
we are committed in body
in mind and in our spirit
and we are veterans
seasoned, gritting and
fairly evenly determined,
we are all things to all people,
we are enigmas in red, white, and blue,
we are Americans in all things we do,
we are the story told in classrooms,
we are life's lessons told  in courtrooms,
we are your history.

"excuse me..."
she stops and looks at him.
"could I ask you a question?"
"yes," he said and nodding his head at her.
"in the morning you sit at one table and
I sit at another...  we smile at each other..."
pausing he looks down at the sidewalk.
Yes."
"could we sit together," she asks?
"I'm married."
"so am I," she responds.
"why," he asks?
I, don't know...   I'm attracted to you I guess..."
"I don't know you," he states.
"I don't know you either," she replies.
"I don't think we better," he explains.
"well...  I'm sorry...  I didn't...  I hope I have not offended you."
"no, not at all," he replies.
she walks off towards her automobile and stops...
she turns in his direction...
"hey what's your name?"
but, before he can responds she says,
"save me a seat tomorrow."

I
I can remember this morning
wanting to speak with you,
wishing there was a way we could meet,
the first meeting is always
the most uncomfortable...
getting things started.

II
I can remember how you looked
how you smiled
sometimes thinking it is all for me,
if you only knew I go there to see you
hoping we can somehow be together,
sharing our married love.

III
foolish of me to think we could be together
bands of gold put us with someone else,
what chance would our straying occur
at a time that is right for both of us.

evening's colors mix and fold together
highlighting darks and darker backgrounds,
deceiving us with their depths of field,
reflecting fog in what little light there is
obscured vision of close by objects,
shadows appear on our flanks and a
faint horizon seems to move up and down
as if the whole world is in a boat rocking
to the movement of waves, relentless
and ever so rhythmic in their cadence,
and the rain cleans the earth of her snow
while creatures large and small huddle
in her crevices and holes, keeping warm,
the pace of life slows a little
a cool wind colorless and damp blows freely
through the silent darkness and shadows
move like reflections on a pond's surface
and are soon stilled by calmness...
over and over again these patterns are
repeated as the evening's colors mix
and fold into the changing night.

genuine feelings emerge
from deep within
a frozen barrier
a reef of incompleteness
a formation of doubt
released in a sequence;
patterns less complicated
forming unusual shadows
a roof top ballet
a show of light and sound
waiting in a pronounced sort of way;
a depressing situation
left along with mute dialogue
a crazy morning ends in frustration
a mild form of disappointment
persuades to ignore the unimportant.

unlikely participants are we today
or any day for that matter
strange our meeting anyway
you look so nice to me and
from out of nowhere you appear,
my fortune becomes misfortune
as I disrespect your integrity.

anxiety fills my thoughts
waiting to see if you'll be there...
perhaps not so hard should I
wish for tomorrow to arrive.

behind closed doors
waiting for me to
intrude upon her world,
she lives for herself,
singing away the night
she flirts with the men who
attract her attention,
soon someone new will
feel and taste the aroma
of her womanhood...
she relieves the pain of
desire by her own touch,
imagining something
new and fresh inside.

inside our wintery cocoon
warm and lazy
we are occupied with
different interests,
another day passes
fretting opportunities
made up on Saturday,
still you guilt manifests
itself in housework
as I pace the floors
admonishing your behavior.

through my own carelessness
the door to you closed tightly,
my mornings now are empty
and only I am to blame for it.

each day passes slower than the day before
taking me farther away from your presence,
often imagining we are dissolved like
crystals of sugar in a cup of coffee, slowly
mixing the influence of our apprehensions.

into my world you again appeared
just as pretty today as last week,
and all I had to go on was a faint
image kept inside my head...
if only I could be direct
assertive..    some might say
yet I know that will never be
remaining to myself and always
locked inside an enduring conflict.

silence swirls around us
worn like borrowed clothes,
we hide behind them
shy creatures at best...
punctuating well concealed
feelings with deliberate quiet,
a failure to communicate
best describes our
dispassionate situations
as we point out our
partner's deficiencies.

our weekends are spent waiting
for someone to talk...
not knowing what to say
or how to say it...
believing silence communicates
all we can be...
a type of inspired quarrelling
that keeps us wanting,
anticipating there must be more.

beside you rests the irregular side of life
loosely worn, your likeable behavior
is shared and guides you through the day,
responsive to others, you initiate the
positive sign of the zodiac while some
struggle in a zoo-like atmosphere at work,
living to help others is everything to you.

today, your smile enticed me closer
reminding me of my routines and
all my yesterdays seemed so old,
willingly, I read your invitation as
those who loved me taught me to
live with the past instead of
migrating South avoiding tomorrows.

carefully, you hold your excitement
wrapped up in a cloth-like mental shroud,
inside your thoughts...
lovingly protected, you continue
each day to overlook life's unkindness,
believing that people are all
your brothers and sisters.

Poetic Muses -- March 1987

I have learned to dwell upon the obvious
wanting it to go wrong all at once.
only I can be responsive to my sorrow
as if it were a reward of some kind,
poor...  poor...  pitiful me...
of all the people on this planet
not one would give a damn and
if they did it would not end there
lord no... they'd expect the same of me.

at the end of a long corridor
a lone table is placed,
behind it a figure sits
clothed in a dark robe,
light shines in over its shoulders
from some unseen source,
dismal eyes peer out from
under a hooded head
nodding in my direction,
beckoning me to move closer,
offering me a chalice form
which its contents must be shared,
a tribute to some immortal power,
an everlasting soul of souls;
I am carried away on wings of words
spoken on my behalf long ago,
waiting in this isolated chamber
for my arrival and I look to see
my name of the list of survivors.

if and when I dream again
more certain will it be,
no rain or ice nor sleet or snow
will enter in this time...
the woman who I chose to
share these nocturnal visits with
well...  must want to be there too
and never will I dream one thought
if there is an inkling going
around that it may not be true.

momma...  I hurt so bad
please make the pain go away,
please hold me momma...
I've been so bad today,
it tears me up inside to see
you so far away, so distant from me,
if I could change my life I would,
I'd live it like you wanted me to,
I swear...  please momma...
no more pain...
I'm sorry momma...  I really am,
I tried...  I really did...  it's just
so hard to be good...
please come back to me momma,
I hurt so bad...
hold me tight momma and
make all this pain go away.

someday we will be available
for each other to share the love
of our endurance and patience;
someday we will have in our hearts
the love we put on paper...
a love we thought would be ours
automatically for sure...
someday we will have the caring
that was always given elsewhere
while our own precious feelings
were maturing all alone...
someday we will be there for
each other even if it is just
to say our final goodbyes.

at the end of a soccer field I sit
eating my lunch in silent isolation,
around me is a forest of thoughts
and memories encircling the
platter of life I hold in my hands,
a chilly wind blows on my right
a noon day sun heats my left and
sunglasses keep me from squinting
out some of my feelings...  my
world appears to be balanced
at least temporarily on the edge
of some trident...  a wrong move
could prove fatal and I wonder in
whose direction will I be pulled,
a canopy of blue overhead keeps
out the rain and my mental
sojourn is filled with all sorts of
relatively mild peaceful apprehensions.

days away from you are incomplete,
filled with questions I should have asked
and answers I should have given,
work becomes a habit to which we all belong
and I wish I could pick with whom...
I give myself this thought to brighten my day.

if the mystique around wishing well were true
I have no doubts I would wish for you...
If thoughts were really worth a penny,
I would build you a castle of feelings...
If the years of our life were written on a blackboard
I would erase all the errors we have made...
If life begins after forty, then I would
never live another day without you.

the mind whispers its loneliness to those
who would offer a little consolation,
the tears that have dried inside and on the face
of my cheek sting the nerves like acid rain,
I have dried to myself often as I recall the
mistakes that now complicate the corner
of the world in which I am living,
the mind whispers it absolution and I
spend time looking the other way,
the stones of my fortress crumbles
my soul trapped inside the particles of dust
and all that is left is the smell of burning flesh.

as the anger is expressed
its effects are felt on a
multitude of planes and
the holes we dig for ourselves
grow deeper and deeper,
comments that once were
made positive are now
deemed negative and the
bitterness increases the loss
of self-esteem we all feel.

lovers in the evening pour out from my imagination
women whose unknown appearance can be described
by a name called out in my sleep...  and to my wife
I must explain why her name was not the same,
lovers in my sleep whose bodies are so close to me,
wrapped around and held close by the arms of dream,
I surrender how for when this unconscious time is done
I may not recognize you...  but, will always remember
your presence that I experienced the night before.

it was too easy
her sitting there
silent...
listening to me
quietly explaining
what I knew,
in her youth
I saw myself
and I wanted
my parents
across from me
instead of her,
those beautiful eyes
looked older...  wiser,
more experienced
next to her
deeper voice... a
graceful manner was
apparent as she sat
with a good posture
we had taught her,
and yet, something
was different and I
felt the truth would
only be shared
with someone else.

on either side of romance
live a response that only
lovers share...  taking their
rightful places in a closet
of out-of-style clothes.

from outside my imagination I
wonder when my thoughts will end,
when the eyes inside my mind will
not see...  when the ideas will dry
up and not be there for me to
rearrange and if my feelings
cannot be expressed...  then my
life would never be the same again.

each year bring her one year closer and
me one less promise left to be broken,
fragile as a vase on a counter top and
age is measured by the brittle hair that
is way too white to be dyed anymore.

the night passes slowly
into day...
minutes drag into hours
sleep hides between the hands
of an electric clock and the
luminescent dial of a pocket watch
on the night stand...
a pendulum swings back and forth
inside the mental aberrations
of the day...
time pauses and in so doing
cause me not to
escape my thoughts.

the world shuts out her children
pretending not to hear their pleas for help,
ignoring a sorrow inherited by each
generation and those to come,
the week will continue to provide
strength so that  the strong can survive in a
manner to which they are accustomed.

united in our thoughts
we used to be...
acceptance of our love
came not easy...
yet, we overcame
our disloyalties,
individual strength
sharpened the instincts,
our love was offered
in more subtle ways...
we drifted away
aimlessly...
on our own voyage
and like Ulysses we
were searching for
a route home.

we sit in distant corners
of an imagination,
out of reach...
melancholy sounds
of a flute are heard
from somewhere
out of sight...
we look into each other's
direction, feeling a
little bit out of touch.

we are solitary substitutes
duplicating and exchanging
the mix of formulas that
compromise our complicated
personalities...  our behavior
may or may not be appropriate
give the circumstance...
the delicate balance that must
be maintained unravels...
we learn to survive the consequences
our decisions have created.

Poetic Muses -- April 1987

morning early they arrive with
their talking and nonsense,
every morning they seem to
occupy the only space around me,
listening to my thoughts as they
are written down on paper;
recapitulating yesterday's events
in operatic details, laughing and
joking while my nature is disturbed;
morning early disrupts my routine
beginning the day with broken
solitude and a promise to find
somewhere else to write today.

I
just for sport they kill
nature's children and
mount on plaques for
all the world to see.

II
short little rains I like
getting caught in them,
wet clothes that seem
to cling tight to me.

III
streams flow inside a
mental image of that on
which we built our banks.

IV
a flower standing in a field
alone was taken for a
remembrance of our love.

V
inside the constraints of choice
a heart murmurs its loneliness
forever as no one seems to hear.

I feel you kisses on my back,
I feel your hands gently caressing,
I feel your body next to mine pushing,
pressing your desires into me
as if to say the forcing is more passionate,
I feel you hair lightly brushing
the surface of all my feelings,
I feel your warmth penetrate my
coolness and I feel myself turning
in your direction to respond.

walk along the shore
let the brackish waters
rinse clean your feet,
let the cool temptation
lure you across the rocks,
walk with me tonight
when you are alone and lonely
walk beside all our fantasies,
choose between the life you seek
what you cannot have or me...
walk along the shore tonight
and feel the sand and shells
pierce the souls of your feet,
stroll in my moon lit reflection
that borders your feelings,
walk into me tonight
and let us be lovers.

inside the lobby of my mind
memories are catalogued
and hung up to dry...
images branded like footsteps
in the mud...  fade...  but
feelings remain
sometimes hidden behind smiles
and friendly gestures and
the next time a plan is carefully
executed not to expose too much,
yet, the warmth of caring and
a need to be loved outweighs
the pain of reaching out.

by myself I venture down the dark passage
step by step...
through a maze of yesterdays
until innocence blocks my path,
shadows on the wall
patterns of light and dark,
fluttering and unstable,
reshaping life's contours like puddles of rain,
provide the clues I need as
each passageway has its own
weariness of sensations...
its own lament...
its own sacrificing adventures,
by myself I venture into the unknow
the unchartered regions of mahogany fantasies
and deliriously exciting nightmares.

her instructions are washed out each week
until the colors of her life fade, leaving
her with a bleached appearance,
she helps herself to a series of bad decisions
waiting for the across-the-fence advice
from all her not-so-close neighbors,
an independent madness for which she searched
creeps into a self-imposed solitude, finally
leaving her empty and missing what she had.

you escape passion
retreating inside the
convenience of sleep,
screaming our your frustrations
ignoring those who would be
damaged by it most,
shrugging it off with a
"I don't care" attitude,
you prevent the debilitating
affects of losing control.

again I am haunted by a silence,
a deprivation of words and thoughts,
again I sit here and am troubled
by other things keeping the exchange
brief and impartial as I can...
no anger...
no happiness...
no excitement...
no fear...
just a void blank facial expression.

tomatoes in my parlor
thirty plants in all,
block my outward vision
hope they will be gone soon,
corn slips in my hallway
they've grown an inch or two,
we leave the house and re-enter
before and after june...
seeds of all sorts and sizes
in my bedroom do not belong,
but they need a quiet place
before they are entombed,
the rakes and hoes and other tools
against the wall must lean,
the house has become an FCX,
the ground is too wet to plow,
this is the story every spring
when a garden it is we want to have,
I won't describe my state-of-mind
when the canning season arrives.

respectfully submitted
my request to you is given,
asking for what may seem
out-of-the-question or
more than is deserved...
my request is genuine
and earned from the heart,
it serves the purpose if
it lasts more than a day
that's better than nothing at all;
if it lasts more than a month or two
that's better than before...
respectfully submitted
I ask of you to take what is offered
and in time, we can learn the rest;
my patience is yours to give
yours to handle as you will and
I will await your prompt reply.

across from me the three ladies sit,
and just for meanness I imagine them naked...
the prettiest one would be dropping
crumbs on the rolls of fat,
probably deciding not to diet;
beside her sits the older version but
better preserved and the only worse than her
bare wrinkled chest is her language;
next is the youthful one
newly married whose innocence draws
attention until one's eye meet the top,
and a flag should cover what is seen.

around the table they sit...  books open
reading as some write and still others talk
while a few are eating as they relax...
find a way to pass the time until class;
and, as the new quarter begins
all have good intentions...
and wholesome impressions...
until they learn how much effort is needed,
expending what they must to make the grade;
around the table they all sit...  each one
defending their purpose with a smile.

a phone call comes often on
mondays and wednesdays,
watts lines bring us closer
that we were yesterday when
messages were transmitted
by a courier service and the
voice on the other end says,
"how's your day been?"
the answer is always the same
pleasant and unassuming
claiming sunshine on a rainy day;
a phone call for a cloudy mood
a toll free exchange is quick
and more often than not is
almost always painfully pleasant.

time slips past its memories
slips past those who would
travel its corridors, folding
and blending on consciousness
into another until its presence
it aged into our souls...
time invades its captors
with persistence silence
and we cry like babies
when we recognize its passage;
time sits on the dark side of
courage, draining strength
from even the strongest of
its sole survivors as it passes
and slips past us quicker than
the day before and all our days
seem as fleeting as an eye blink.

if I cannot love you then I have
no love to give to anyone...
is that ok?
is that fair?
I know our love is to help us love others
but if I cannot love you then nobody can...
or me either...  and we will waste away,
together...  in memory of misaligned promises...
if I cannot love you then I
have no love to give anyone.

one is patient
quiet
self involved
whose strength comes from an
ability to avoid conflict;
one is impatient
loud
uninvolved
whose strength is articulated
in the presence of conflict;
one is young
impressionable
talented
whose strength comes from a
mixture of both influences...
all parts of a whole
whose struggle and growth
will always be a family.

sometimes its better not to see you
since I cannot have you and will never
have you in the way that I want...
sometimes it's better not to know what's missing
but I cannot give you up now
not with the way I feel...
not after knowing you...
sometimes it's better to want what's best
or what's best for you and others...
I just don't know anymore what's best;
sometimes it's better not to see you
then I miss you and call you and want more...
and it all seems worse to me...
much worse than had I done nothing at all.

once or twice I've tried to
write something you would like
but all my words belong to others
and all our feeling hold no surprises
around which words might fall into place;
your life, inside its complications, lives
soft and sweet and quiet...
hiding who you are from me
and all you are is what you read,
no tears
no joys
just an incompleteness,
as we emulate to survive
to continue what we have...
once or twice I've tried to
capture your mysterious behavior.

over in your direction I look
not meaning to intrude,
your legs are noticed first
around my body I feel them pressing
your waist nicely tucked into a plain skirt
leads me upward...
vividly my eyes feel the softly sharped breasts
extending out from under a knitted top;
your face I notice last with its
dark hair and beautiful brown eyes
and when you catch me watching,
the most sensuous exciting look sends shutters;
I feel as though you've read my thoughts
and now my privacy has been invaded
by your silent but penetrating awareness.

Poetic Muses -- May 1987

afternoons in small towns
seem painfully slow...
strangers never seem to
know where to park
their cars or if a smile
is friendly or otherwise.

the regulars stroll by
their orders always the same,
and their seats appear
to be reserved, although
that are not that particular.

words like an assortment of mixed nuts
are picked through each morning as we
continue to crack upon each other's feelings.

are we still responsible
for those who would
treat us poorly because
they are hiding all
their insecurities again?

when do we embrace the
evil that regulates our lives
as being one more circus act
meant for our enjoyment.

we live vicariously on the edge of
each other's temptations...  a push
in either direction becomes an
unexpected but exciting conclusion.

May's month brings hope for each year
until our opportunities expire and we
are again measured against the full time
equivalent that produces everything
except our monetary psychic income.

we shed tears over that which
we cannot have when we should
realize we actually get all that
we need and a little bit more.

it is one of perception not to have
a vested personal interest in order
to function well but not excitedly,
a form of underutilization with
the appearance of doing what is
expected...  as a way of getting by
in someone else's territory...  a
form of apathy with positive
overtones and limited influences.

copies of her life are available
at the newsstand around the corner,
her home town innocence spreads
across the front page...  she leans
towards change but all they want
is to look down her loose blouse.

I hope you find
what you want
with your abrasive
manners and
underlying comments,
you deserve what
you worked so
hard to get here.

once when missing you
was fashionable I longed
for someone else to miss
someone that would allow
me to want them as well,
but now, all I have is an
uncanny desire not to
care for you or anyone.

my time to do without has
approached its rightful
ownership...  an interview
with my past reveals a
full spectrum of pleasures
that now should be
only pleasantly remembered.

longer slender fingers around me hold
rough in texture, motion and appeal,
awaken in me those desire hard to find
they parallel my own circumstance, a
semblance of Southern reconstruction and disorder,
long slender fingers choking my manhood
stretching its tolerance and the deception is
fastened tightly by the security of privacy,
long slender fingers pull out of me the fluid
while my convulsions subside...  a serenity rolls,
the night air cools droplets of moisture
forming a the base of my newly waxed body,
long slender fingers want more that just
the magic they have recently created in me.

I don't know you anymore and
I am not sure that I want to,
you wear the convenience of
married clothes while operating
quite independently from home,
inflicting your self-interests against mine,
you want to look young for me
yet you've never around me long enough,
you enjoy being alone and need
more time for yourself you claim,
yet, that leaves no time for us...
you are quiet and allow actions to
express felling that you keep
behind your wedding band...
I know you not these days and
I am not sure that I want to anymore.

we challenge the day's opening statement
with our own forecasts of its conclusions,
sitting side-by-side like unrelated pieces
of a puzzle, a self-sustained obedience
controls our wills...  we are ironically
at the wrong place at the wrong time.

her out-of-place manner
left on the kitchen sink
made her presence seem
wicked and the stranger
she sat close to made no
opening remarks for her.

we follow our shadows until
other's seem bolder or until
the rain prevents its casting.

each glance seem parting
each movement seems final
each word seems connect
somehow to goodbye and
my self-confidence falters
as yours seems to increase.

the upside of loneliness is
that one must take care of
one's self...  the downside
is that this responsibility
cannot really be delegated.
