younger shoes walk faster
older shoes walk softer
clothes make the elders
but not the boy or girl,
our society casts aside
what others embrace,
reasons unknown will
die with the choice.
wisdom sits in the empty
chair on the gravesite
while survivors mourn
the eternal loss of that
which they did not know,
and never will - as hard
as they think they tried.
flowers cover the dead
like warmth covers surfers
who look for the wave
that will take them home
instead of farther away,
shoes are easily purchased
and left behind when there's
nothing left to lose, but
they can never replace the
thoughts from anyone
deciding to wear them.
