in single file flight, they swoop down
riding inches above the water,
wings outstretched,
sleek bodies gliding tail to nose gracefully,
then curve up quickly,
as if to catch a breath of air
before,
diving down and leveling off again;
following the leader
in perfect unison,
without reinforcements or incentives,
simply for the ultimate joy of survival.
