butterfly held down by the humidity, we
walk around the community as if it is of
no concern, knowing our lungs are working
overtime as are our hearts pumping blood,
but we are invigorated by the opportunity
to push our bodies to the limits... meanwhile,
our neighbors sit inside their air-conditioned
homes grumbling about the increased costs
of utilities... the sun hides behind the clouds
from the evening before when thunderstorms
blew through the valley like tornados but
without all the property damage other than
flying debris from the incessant winds...
we pay the price each morning that we awaken
since it is another day of increased costs and
fewer products to buy at the grocery stores...
we wonder about our ancestors and the price
that they had to pay while not concerning
ourselves in the least about any and all future
generations and what they might face... we
are as hypocritical as our politicians, learning
to become like them rather than fight them...
and the transformation we do not see at all.
