Civil Avoidance

the last remnants of rain trickle
down the rusty gutter spouts,
muted chirping in the distance,
tire sounds on a nearby highway
water splashing as they pass;
groans of an engine straining
wind blowing quietly beside me
noticed only by moving tree tops,
squinted eyes as the sun peaks out
coolness felt on wet shoulders
from the shimmering waters of the pool,
cat hairs seen everywhere after cleaning,
screens protects insects from entering
my sacred porch as I sit quietly
collecting my thoughts from memory
and tracing their movement on paper
as if some kind of justification
prevents me from replacing boards
purchased yesterday when I should
have stayed at home even though
our city is relatively covid free.
