the expectations of peers who
lived long before our consideration;
spoiled feelings from lost insurrections
worn on our souls like tattoos of color
fading long before their memories end;
early days of lessons learned…
only to find out later they were false,
living with falsehoods for decades;
iron minds pounded into the ground
like anchors for our inflated hopes
waffle in the air like canvas tents;
soldiers in arms we were back then…
at least a few of us and survived we did
even though we died with our memories;
families and friends we generated
like an assembly line but without the
follow through for life's longevity;
rain in the Valley came often
snow in the Smokey's often too
and we were often too busy to notice;
pearls of wisdom remained in the water
inside the infected oysters left alone
until they could be cleaned properly;
after year our minds grew less articulate
with all the stray thoughts we were given
most of which were already pre-ordained;
sadly, our sarcasm was buried inside
the caskets of our retired lives and we
sat on the beach under umbrellas
watching the end of our lives parade by.
