FROM 1986 -- February -- page 2

Between Smiles
she reaches out
his eyes meet hers
enticed by their glances
and in between smiles,
they long to be one,
anticipate closeness.

Silent Siting
penetrating, her eyes sensuously
focus on him...  an unsettling
nervousness flows through his body
like a dull aching virus...  she
talks to a friend and he wants
to be her next stranger...
her confidant of sorts but much more;
to have the courage to convey
is not his style...  from the corners
of the room they sit in silence,
their backs to each other,
not knowing...  not seeing...
their eyes had met earlier and had
looked into each other's souls,
sharing a brief loneliness together;
through an open window,
the soothing morning warmth
eases earlier tensions and he writes
deliberately of his cavalier attitude
and glances from a beautiful stranger.

Friendly Persuasion
a gesture
a smile
a phrase
walk with me
stand or sit
beside me
with me
through it all
reassuring
but not exact.

Painted Black
and the words don't bend
like they should,
wasted warriors cringe
in painted black,
another day passes unnoticed,
thoughts, easily sharpened
by the years, sit just
outside my grasp like the
crown of a banished King.

Isolated Imprisonment
we are self-imprisoned in a
void of uncertainty,
our child-like behavior fits
incongruently with the adult world
in which we try to belong;
your hate and my retaliation
my hate and your withdrawal,
resentment stretched like barbed wire
around our modest home;
isolated from each other
reaching our with amputated feelings,
we find ourselves sinking deeper
into a quicksand of despair;
we find ourselves out of reach,
out of touch...
she wishes for deafness and
longs to be removed
from our selfishness...
