All Creatures

playful is the caterpillar that inches its
way along a broken decaying tree branch,
like some ancient medieval warrior on
a sacred religious quest to find truth and
the long abandoned religious holy grail;
determined is the hummingbird who
gorges itself on red nectar while fighting
off similar competitors looking for food
before the long, lonely flight southward;
nature rules the domain of the ground
and all creatures great and small, giving
them the means to evolve and grow and
survive in areas where others find death
the last option that they must endure;
but who opened the door to such trivial
pursuits as those of life and death when
one's birth is no longer a matter of choice?
