Off In The Distance

the sun beats against my back
clouds move in silent serenity
masking the relentless heat;
an accelerating engine moans
birds chirp and chatter through the humidity
occasionally one flies into my sight
as the stillness rectifies nothing;
the heat pump hums laying down the bass
water in the pool moves out in both directions
the sun breaks through the clouds
like fireworks on the fourth of July
and we know the grass is growing;
rabbits flirt with enclosed cats as they
scamper around as if life belonged to them
eating today instead of carrying;
tranquility permeates the air and nothing
seems to move conserving energy
except a lone bird who decides to
check out its dilapidated house;
no motor cars passing by
no sirens of distress our and about
only a gradually increasing moisture
that has decided to come out and play.
