Five At A Time - 1985 - D

UNTITLED
the rain falls freely
in slanted patterns
bouncing off the ground,
concentric rings
converge outward,
puddles reflect life's
distorted images as
they pass unannounced
undisturbed
and the moisture
in the air annoys
our youthful vanity,
even dull colors
shine newly bright.

UNTITLED
filtered through a fantasy of disbelief,
a finely laced, softly woven silk web
of disclosure reveals our patterns,
delicate sensations weighted with
anticipation stand abated nearby;
the last days spent in silence as the
scent of after bath pulls us to a
closer point-of-view...  a departure,
and the little bear fir felt freely sits
on the desk alone...  a symbol of
closeness hauntingly different.

UNTITLED
some are yellow
some are red
others hold their green
some stand naked towards the sky
their clothes huddled on the ground;
the weather changes cool to brisk
blue skies turn to grey,
a mother holds her nursing child
close against her breast while
wood stoves churn and overs burn,
a fallen season put to rest.

Around the Cafe
faces in the cafe belong to
morning people,
early birds whose symbiotic affairs
with each other draws them
around a cluster of tables and chairs
in the French-style sitting room;
here, sit the regulars
and the couples who hide inside
their newspapers talking;
in and out the people go
up and down they sit or stand
the news is gospel to many
but the faithful remain uninvolved;
ties and coats and flannel shirts
old and young drop by,
a carousel of people with kaleidoscope
intents share something special
their labors cannot take away.

UNTITLED
two met for coffee
a weekday ritual,
briefly tempting
risking their identity
ignored by the strangers around them;
unannounced intentions
stumbling over their words
and careful attentions;
smiling...  he wants to ask,
smiling back...  she wants to be asked;
awkwardly arranged plans
rearrange their lives,
embarking on the physical
attraction soon to be lost
in a courageous nightmare of guilt;
strangers for coffee and
become friends and in time
become lovers always separated
by two decades of alternative choices;
she... a virgin to the situation
he...  has been there before.
