Death of a Decade Followed -- page 10

On Borrowed Time
on borrowed time we all seem to be living
it is the radical nature of our existence
even when it is not believed by many
but we live our lives with alcohol and drugs
in such consumption we should be dead already
yet we live again to drink another day;
a madness is a catching disease
just like the corona virus
and even though we take no precautions
we know we are not invincible
only a little stupid maybe...
on borrowed time we all are living
as if life meant nothing at all or very little
and the deaths we've seen in twenty twenty
should last us all a lifetime knowing
it provides us with only limited reassurance,
it is our lives we are willing to give
in the hopes of a better life offered,
and the faith we swore up and down
we would have have in our lifetimes...
we find ourselves curiously kneeling
at the church on the corner of our block
and even more curious is the fact
that it was not there yesterday or
the day before as any of us recall.

Always Tomorrow
life lives inside the realm of possibilities
each person makes their own choices
leaders get relatively high on political power
crowds gather around the movie stars
we are not bothered by the debt we owe
nor are we troubled by the immigration,
we live in societies of clowns and fools
all not giving a damn about tomorrow
and all the unintended consequences of
all the actions that were taken today;
there is no desire to cry "fire" by anyone
nor do we have the desire to put one out if started
we are only bound by public opinions that
have been influence by the media,
forming absolutely no thoughts of our own
just like Sundays listening to sermons...
in God we trust --  all others bring data
and never caring about the outcomes
remaining inside the wombs of their control,
allowing our societies to worsen and worsen
as we move forward through time and progress
opens new markets across the globe
leaving us no reason to believe in tomorrow
or that anything we ever get any better.

Truth Not Shared
cats lay together on heated blankets
windows are pulled down and latched
curtain in rooms of living are drawn
leaving others to provide sunlight,
the thermostat registers sixty eight
warm liquids consumed instead,
birds have all migrated south
including our last to leave hummingbirds,
bushes have been cut back around the pond
trees have been trimmed  --  others cut down,
frost has invaded our land all around and
the snakes never seen have disappeared,
the leaves from the trees have finally fallen
leaving mounds of reds, yellows, and browns;
we turn our sight to inside chores while
returning outside to get the mail and
looking up acknowledge a forecasted snow
and the closing of the schools that try to teach
our children to become better people
than the ones who gave them birth and
since all our working days have passed away
we remain inside our homes with cats, trying
to ignore what's happening on the outside
because truth is never shared on television.

Now...  We Teach Mandarin
most of us still believe in fairy tales
or so we been told by our elders,
ghosts and goblins on Halloween,
stories told with bizarre endings
like the ones told of Native Americans
or of the Black man brought from Africa
and how America finally died once when
the masses realized they had the power;
baskets of hope dumped out on the ground
like the ones holding apples for pies
topping them with ice cream on the 4th of July...
but all those celebrations have disappeared
and now we celebrate Chinese holidays
and how they conquered the great lion
without losing a single Chinese life,
not including lives lost from the pandemic;
most of us still believe in fairy tales
and how democracy was just an experiment,
failing like it did before in Greece even
though a few gentle souls tried it again,
and it would have succeeded if it were not
for all the people who were against it or
wanted this or that without working for it,
and those brought from Africa who started
a cultural revolution that only ended when
Mandarin was taught instead of English.
