Death of a Decade Followed -- page 8

The Use Of Dictionaries
the nature of my discovery
has been quite unexpected
mumbling around on each page
trying to find the right word,
when it is not the word I
am after but the thought,
the idea...
the concept...
and when I do find it the
meaning and purpose flow quickly
as one might expect when'
seeing a waterfall...
and the emotions felt are always
merely individual even though
they could easily be shared,
as one might share a doughnut
with a beggar on the street
just around the corner where
no one can see the transaction;
we are not as gifted as we think
just plan and simple
and the words we read are,
for the most part,
always understandable and if one
needs a dictionary for understanding
and perhaps a little clarity, they
can be purchased from the beggar.

The Morning Treat
silence enters the room where
my cats have been playing,
as the three of them have formed
some kind of friendship trinity
being relatively the same age
and raised together as kittens;
and while there is noise manifesting
itself on one of my ears, the room
in which we are are staying is quiet,
not even a church mouse would venture inside;
it is nice...  the silence...
even though not as absolute as imagined
peaceful and serene...
my cats are washing themselves or
curled up underneath a table...
or sitting on my lap...
giving as much warmth as taking;
funny little creatures
sit in silence on the mantle
waiting for the Christmas Holiday
while others stand on the floor
beside the fireplace...  also in silence
as if they are guarding something,
and just about the time when I think
my little morning world is perfect...
a door opens...
all hell breaks loose...
crying...
whining...
my wife enters smiling as
she prepares their morning treat.

Free But Under Control
we journey though life on boats of fear
and were first boarded with our parents
then our teaches, co-workers, and friends
all of whom taught us and expected us
to live in a world of apprehension and fear
and if we did not "toe the line," negative
consequences of some sort would follow;
fear predicated upon rules and regulations
designed long ago by our founding fathers,
keeping us all free but under control, with
no deviation from the norm and sacrifices
all us Americans were required to make;
we journey through life in boats of fear
never disembarking on dry land and
never really free to roam around the water
in case we reach our own horizons or
find a way to eventually learn the truth
about the world in which we live
and will ultimately die but not before
we learn to tie all the sailor's knots, and
learn to walk the decks without swaying;
we are a restless, peculiar breed of human
not bound by any obligations to our past
save the ones acquired on our boats of fear
that we are about to toss over into the ocean.

Global Conclusions
we our united in our animosities
but not in our hope,
we are the enemies of our enemies
and will forever be united,
we share nothing in common
other than our desire to hate
and when the wars are over
we will go our separate ways
never to meet again
unless we are tempted by fate
or the commonality of survival;
our latent habits are not unique
nor are they individual
nor were they ever intended to be,
there is always strength in numbers
when liberty is at stake
and not freely taken away
which is what brought us to these
shores in the first place;
and in our hours of need
we will be there for each other
believing with every fiber given to us
that democracy is worth saving
but probably not in its present form
and unfortunately for all of us, will
never lead to world to its conclusion.
