Death of a Decade Followed -- page 12

Big City Crime
there were cries of indecent exposure
from somewhere on the playground
but everyone was locked away inside
and it was the middle of the night
only a few hours away from dawn
when good turns into evil
but before it turns back again and
we can trust the judgement of our peers
who know the differences between the two
even though they do not show it;
there were cries of indecent exposure
down in the bowels of the subway
that shut down at midnight
to celebrate the holiday but
all the rumors prevailed and the
city's finest paraded by for hours
finding only well fed rats instead;
the were cries of indecent exposure
in the bedroom on Park Avenue
neither resident was present
as they were on holiday in Russia,
and no one was allowed to remain
not even the maid or the butler;
a sad day for the big city to discover
no crime committed or perpetrator.

Not No Longer
spandex no longer stretches in America
her open boarders strewn with dead corpses
trying to flee one oppression for another;
her hands have been scared from mining
but the wounds of violence won't heal
even though the wealthy offered prayers;
lawyers weep in public after being disbarred
sending more and more criminals to jail,
crooked politicians are offered teaching posts
after losing one too many elections;
obesity permeates every facet of the country
from rural settings to urban dwellings as
"all you can eat" buffets refuse to shut down
even in the wake of our global sickness;
southerners with concealed carry permits
escort seniors into churches, remaining
on guard and vigilant until next Sunday;
flags of all nations adorn New York City
thanking us for forced generosity given
and inviting all of us for a day or two visit
before the bombing to scare away terrorists;
seasons come and seasons go or so I've been told
and what always goes around comes back around
but the media in America has decided to
write their stories not for truth but for Pulitzers.

Edge of Darkness
on the edge of darkness
when crows don't cry,
and cows in pastures
lay down to die,
and babies nurse of stranger's breasts
as devoted moms are incarcerated,
and husbands beat
the keys of pianos
instead of their children;
on the edge of darkness
thrives our souls
as they bounce around
from one opinion to another
in search of Doctor Death
and his famous side kick;
on the edge of darkness
when all felons go free
from racial disparities and
the whites of their eyes
is like frying over easy;
on the edge of darkness
we live selfishly
mourning our loss of freedom,
the stars and stripes
and all previous indignities.

Land of the Living
graveyards are full of
dead bodies as is expected
and life isn't just offered
to those faint of heart who
live vicariously through
the stories of others and
those whose stories fail
the test of accuracy; but...
history is not about truth
only about the winners
whose lives are not always
laid on beds of roses;
since dead we are not
it is life we must live
regardless of our past
and what our families did
but because of our future
and what we do instead;
we are in peril if we were
to think otherwise and
try to absorb the guilt
of the dead from years ago
when reality is not longer
ours for the taking and
our past returns again
but not as a witness.
