youth prepared her not for what life
would take from her more than once,
her pride and anger kept her going
wanting more than she gave up.

come and go they do
and f forgotten will stay
away from our soul.

she was just a girl looking for
someone to keep her warm
and feed her child, she would deal
with the rest of life on her own.

how young they look each day
now since white appeared under
my chin of encouragement...
now young indeed.

her honesty surfaced between the
sheets as she told him why he was
back in her bed... it was of no
concern as long as she loved him.

a cold sun penetrated the room
where we sat and ate in the morning,
it was easy to speak of equal rights
with our bellies full... it was time
when avoiding was the only meal
served and we were all contented.
